Shakib negative in first Covid-19 test

by MD Samsuzzaman Siyam

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who returned to the country on Thursday following the suspension of IPL, returned negative in his first Covid-19 test today. Meanwhile, Mustafizur Rahman, who accompanied Shakib from India, is still awaiting his test result.

“Shakib was tested negative in his first Covid test. However, we will be getting Mustafizur’s test result tomorrow,” informed Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) physician Monjurul Hossain Chowdhury to The Daily Star.

Both Shakib and Mustafizur are quarantined at different city hotels.

The duo is supposed to undergo further Covid tests within the next few days.

Shakib and Mustafizur arrived in the country last Thursday via a chartered flight, which was arranged by the BCCI with their respective franchises Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals carrying the cost of the flight.

Both Shakib and Mustafizur have been included in the 23-member preliminary squad for Bangladesh’s forthcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka later this month. And the Bangladesh team management is looking forward to getting back their two key players in time ahead of the crucial ODI series.

Meanwhile, Shakib’s IPL teammate Tim Seifert was the latest Kolkata player to have tested positive for coronavirus. Seifert was due to return to New Zealand on a charter flight with the IPL’s Kiwi cohort but the 26-year-old failed both his pre-departure PCR tests and is now having to stay back in India.

Earlier, Shakib’s two other Kolkata teammates — spinner Varun Chakravarthy and pacer Sandeep Warrier — tested positive for Covid-19. The match between Kolkata and Royal Challengers Bangalore was postponed after they tested positive last week before the abrupt suspension of the Twenty20 competition, a direct consequence of a resurgence of the Covid-19 pandemic in India.
