Aaron Rodgers told Packers free agents he didn’t expect to be back in 2021, report says

Aaron Rodgers saw the writing on the wall.

The Packers quarterback has reportedly played his last snap with Green Bay, but to members of the Packers organization, that might not be new news.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Rodgers felt that he wasn’t going to come back to the Packers for another run in 2021, and he had told pending free agents of the Packers that he likely wouldn’t be suiting up for another season in Green Bay.

“What I’m told from multiple sources is that, Aaron Rodgers was telling the Packers’ prospective free agents, basically, ‘Before you make any decisions, I’m probably not gonna be here.’ To the point where he was telling them, I’m told, all the way back to the beginning of last season. That was in the wake — the months after the team had drafted Jordan Love.”

TIMELINE: Where did the Rodgers-Packers relationship go wrong?

While several players ultimately signed extensions with the team — lineman David Bakhtiari, running back Aaron Jones — Garafolo reports that the players felt that Rodgers maybe was upset over the team still drafting Love and didn’t find much threat in his words.

Also, Garafolo says that players knew of the supposed preferred landing destinations for Rodgers in 2020.

The rift between Rodgers and the Packers has seemingly grown irreparably wide, with recent reports indicating that Rodgers refuses to come back to Green Bay unless they fire GM Brian Gutekunst.

Whether or not Rodgers is done with the Packers, though, it’s impressive that the team and the quarterback kept this all under wraps for just about nine months.
