Empowering the differently-abled | The Daily Star

Prerona Foundation under its “Amra Shikhi, Amra Pari” programme has partnered with institutions working for the welfare of differently-abled individuals, to create sustainable livelihood generation opportunities by empowering them with skills and providing them with the right platforms to showcase their products, said a press release.

It plans to launch its newest initiative Kriya, which will be the country’s first e-commerce platform for showcasing products exclusively made by differently-abled people. Kriya would open a new window of opportunity in the socioeconomic development of the differently-abled communities in the country.

Recently, Prerona Foundation organised a three-day workshop on Product Development for teachers of its partner schools and institutions. The objective of this workshop was to introduce the teachers to new skills, techniques and ideas, which they can incorporate in their vocational training lessons for differently-abled students. In doing so, Prerona Foundation is helping in the capacity development of the differently-abled communities.

The products made by the differently-abled students have already garnered sizeable attention. At PFDA – Vocational Training Centre, the students make high-quality masks amongst other products. Students from Society for the Welfare of Autistic Children (SWAC), Amar Joti Special School, One Culture Foundation and Beautiful Mind School are also making saree, scarf, jewellery and other accessories and home décor items as well.

The philosophy behind “Kriya” was announced at the closing ceremony of the workshop of Product Development.

Dr A M Parvez Rahim, chief coordinator of autism and NDD cell at Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Mubina Asaf, director of governing body at Prerona Foundation were present at the event as special guests.
