Police detained at least 10 leaders and activists of Left Democratic Alliance for two hours in Rajshahi city today, foiling their planned demonstration protesting the upcoming visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

All of the detained LDA leaders were released from Boalia Police Station around 6:45pm, said Nibaran Chandra Burman, officer-in-charge of the police station.

He said police picked them up as they brought out a procession without prior permission.

Murad Morshed, convenor of Rajshahi chapter of Gana Shanhati Andolon, told our Rajshahi correspondent that the incident took place at 4:45pm.

“We didn’t bring out any procession. As we were preparing to hold a peaceful human chain, some policemen swooped on our men and started beating them,” he said.

At one stage, the police picked up 10 LDA men including LDA Rajshahi Convenor Ragib Ahsan Munna, Enamul Haque, Rajshahi unit president of Communist Party of Bangladesh, and Alfaj Hossain, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal convenor, the OC said.

LDA could not stage their demonstration in the city as it was called as part of a countrywide programme to protest Modi’s visit on the occasion of Mujib Borsho and Bangladesh’s golden jubilee celebration of independence.
