Banks, stock market are themselves ‘hospitalised’

by Khan Helal

Coming down heavily on the government for looting money from different banks and inactions against loan defaulters, BNP MP Harunur Rashid yesterday told parliament that that all the banks were admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital due to their sorry state.

On the other hand, the opposition MP said country’s stock market was admitted to the ICU of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Participating in the discussion on the proposed budget for 2021-22 fiscal, he said the country’s banks are being severely attacked by looters today. Thousands of crores of taka are being borrowed, but no one is repaying the loan. They are wandering around rejoicing. “That is why all the banks today are admitted in all the cabins of Bangabandhu Medical University Hospital.”

Harun further said today the constitution is no longer a document of governing the state; it has become a document of deception with the majority of the people.

He said the president as per the power bestowed upon him in the Constitution has pardoned 40-50 people accused of murder during the grand alliance government.

“The report, published in Al Jazeera television channel, has tarnished the country’s image abroad.”

He said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was given two years’ imprisonment on political grounds and the government is not giving her opportunity to go abroad for treatment.

“The most heinous convicted persons are being pardoned. It can’t be,” he said.

He demanded that the government gives permission to Khaleda Zia to receive treatment abroad.

He also demanded an end to extrajudicial killings.

“Have we been able to build the foundation of our democracy in 50 years? Is there any democratic situation in the country? Is there any electoral system in the country?” he questioned.

Harun said there was no way to deny the government’s achievements. “Of course, the prime minister had made history,” he said, adding, “Padma bridge, metro rail, nuclear power plant, tunnels are being built in the country. There is no way to deny such development activities.”

After Harun’s speech, ruling party whip Abu Sayeed Al Mahmood Swapon said what the BNP MP said about the constitution should be expunged.

He said Ziaur Rahman started the politics of killing by “crushing the constitution under the boot”.

“Ziaur Rahman is the mastermind of bank looting culture. Bank looting started from his time. 90 percent of the directors of different banks [involved in bank loot] will be found to be BNP supporters,” he said.

Opposition leader Raushan Ara Mannan said small and medium enterprises were disappointed with the budget. There is not much to be found for the common people in it.

Bikolpodhara Bangladesh lawmaker MA Mannan said people have witnessed irregularities and corruption in the health sector. The most frustrating picture of spending money has been seen in this sector. The reason is lack of ability and skill. Lack of such capacity in an important sector like health and their failure is unacceptable.

Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizvandary of Bangladesh Tarikat Federation said corruption, bureaucratic tangle and lack of good governance are obstructions behind the budget not being implemented.

Workers Party MP Lutfunnesa Khan said allocation in the health sector was much less than needed. More importantly, money in health sector is not used properly and transparently. Unimaginable corruption took place in procurement in the heath sector, she added.
